Old Wilson Schoolhouse Grant
Project Description
Teton County received $600,000 in community Facilities Grant funds to complete the renovation of a former and historic schoolhouse. The remaining renovations include roof, electrical plumbing, windows, doors, catering kitchen, general interior, landscaping and reinstallation of a cupola to house a bell. The portion of the building that has been renovated houses a pre-school center. The remainder of the structure will be used for activities such as social gatherings, club and community meetings and school age youth programming.
Relation to Quality of Life and Economic Development
The mission of the Old Wilson Schoolhouse is to maintain a community center whose activities will preserve local history and help sustain and enhance the year-round economic, educational, recreational and social well being of residents and visitors to Wilson and Teton County. Youth in the community will have access to afterschool activities and programs. Children will have reliable access to pre-school education. Community organizations will have access to a facility to hold regular events, programs and activities.
Project's Complement to Other Development Initiatives
A solid business plan is in place that defines the non-profit's plan to operate the facility. A management team has been identified, one member of which is a tenant in the building. Programming for youth activities will be coordinated through one of the management team members. The non-profit and community volunteers have done a commendable job managing the facility and renovations over the last four years.
